One of the most common themes for DIY advice is regarding home painting, particularly by amateurs, so here are the Budget DIY Top ten painting tips :

1. Before painting with gloss paint, wipe the surfaces down with white spirit.

2. Don't wear any fluffy clothing when painting!

3. If painting with a roller tray, place the tray inside a plastic bag before use, close it at one end loosely enough so the bag dips down into the tray. Then fill the tray with paint on top of the bag. Less mess to clear up when you are finished!

4. Place an open paper bag by the phone so you can stick a hand in it to answer the phone.

5. Paint crazing will happen if you try to apply a second coat of paint before the first is dry. Be patient before applying that second coat. If the crazing is too deep you will have to strip the paint and start again!

6. Flaking and blistering happens when the second coat of paint is not sticking to the first. Sand it down, when dry, to a firm surface. Wipe with spirit and repaint.

7. Wear an old hat when painting the ceiling. If you wear glasses to paint, use cling film to cover the frame and lenses.

8. If you are painting a whole room, the order of work is ceiling, walls, gloss paint on doors and windows.

9. The method of painting walls with a roller and paint tray is to paint a big W , then paint crosswise, then up and down.

10. If you do splash paint onto carpets or other decor, clean it up immediately! Oil based paints need a little white spirit, (so always get some when you buy your paint). Water based paint can be removed with lukewarm water.
